Louie’s 13th Last Regatta
The annual Louie’s Last Regatta is coming up Saturday, September 24th. The event’s title may be inspired by our flagship ale, but it’s about so much more than sail boats and beer.
Louie’s Last Regatta was started in 1999 by a group of Milwaukee sailors who basically wanted one more sailing regatta before they had to pull their boats from the water. To make their effort more attractive to sailors thinking about snow shovels and ski trips this devoted group decided to make Louie’s into a charity event. The first Louie’ Last Regatta brought in $900 and twelve boats participated.
The event grew steadily in popularity and money raised. Major sponsors came forward, boat crews donated and the post race party grew. Louie’s Challenge otherwise known as “sanctioned bribery” was a unique and surprisingly popular fund raising feature of the Regatta. Started in 2001 boat crews could bribe the race committee for… read more »

7 Things You Never Knew About Hops
1) Hops don’t grow on vines, they grow on bines.
2) Hops’ closest relative is cannabis.
3) Only the female cones are used for brewing beer.
4) In the northern hemisphere bines grow clockwise, in the southern hemisphere, counter clockwise.
5) Hops contain acids that when boiled, act as a natural preservative. Because of that preservative, extra hops were put in beers for long voyages to India, creating the
popular style India Pale Ale.
6) Hops have been used as a digestive aid and as an antibiotic.
7) Pillows used to be filled with hops to help people fall asleep, but since the chemical composition changes, the hops need to be changed every few months.

Warm Beer?
As summer slowly approaches, the desire for an ice cold beer out on the deck becomes greater. But why the ice cold? Sometimes when your beer is that cold, it numbs your taste buds and all you’re tasting is the cold. True, some styles are served best a little on the chilly side. But, allowing a beer to warm up just a little can bring out several complexities that can go unnoticed when they’re as cold as you can get them. The next time you try a craft beer, taste it when you first get it, let it warm up and see what new flavors you get.

Learn to pair food with beer. If you’re going to eat and drink, make it count. Don’t use those calories up with a porter and fish… read more »
